In the Hernando County area, there are many owners interested in land that allows them to own horses and other footed animals. The first thing to remember is that the zoning laws are different for each county in Florida.
A good place to check is the Zoning laws under the specific county’s website. When thinking of moving to Hernando and you have horses or would like to own horses, the rule is 1 grazing animal and their offspring per Acre.
This applies to zoning under AR (Agricultural Residential). There is also a “rounding up” rule with the acreage of a lot. If you own 1.5 AR zoned land, then you are allowed 2 grazing animals and their offspring (the 1.5 was rounded up to 2). Another common farm animal many people are interested in is chickens.
In Hernando county, a homeowner, including Residential zoned land, are allowed to have 4 chickens (hens or pullets only). However, keep in mind that are HOA take precedence to the rules of the county and you must follow those if there is a “no chickens” rule.
